Regency Period (1800 - 1830)
The term "Regency" encompasses the introduction of Greek, Roman and Egyptian elements brought from the Continent, especially France. Much furniture was made with rosewood veneers, a new fashionable timber imported from Brazil and the East Indies. Carved giltwood and bronze and painted decorations such as Egyptian heads, lion's heads and animal leg supports were all incorporated in high Regency furniture. Much brass inlay was introduced in this period, as was the sabre leg. Various design books were published illustrating exotic Regency designs, for example by Thomas Hope, Henry Holland and Sir John Soane.
